What is GEMS at Streams?

A new program launched at Streams this winter — GEMS Girls’ Club! We had 9 girls attend our first event and now have almost twice that many signed up. We’re very excited about how this program is reaching young students in our community.

Our Spiritual Care Coordinator Makalah, who is organizing the program, shared, “I am excited for a chance to show love specifically to this group of girls; to spend time with them, laugh with them, do crafts together and remind them of how important they are.” The program provides a safe place for girls to be themselves.

“We are all chosen and loved by Jesus, and I think embedding these truths into girls’ minds at this young age can have a great impact as they continue to grow,” said Makalah. “I am eager to see how God will use GEMS to work in the lives of these girls and their families.”

What is GEMS?
GEMS is a global Christian organization that provides resources to support girls of all ages through club meetings. Their mission is to bring girls everywhere into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Churches all over the world utilize the GEMS resources to run clubs. Additionally different groups and individuals across the United States utilize GEMS to provide clubs for girls in their community in an after school setting. Through clubs the program seeks to help girls find a place to belong and be loved.

Why is it important?
Girls in our community face a number of challenges. It is important that they have a place where they feel supported and encouraged. GEMS girls’ club at Streams seeks to provide a fun and safe environment for girls in elementary school to belong. Not only do they have a safe place to hang out, but they get to play games, do crafts, build relationships, and learn about the love of Jesus.

What will the girls in our GEMS class be learning?
In addition to time spent playing games, getting to know one another and doing crafts, we also have a short lesson at GEMS. In these lessons, we talk about how Jesus loves us. Girls will learn that they are accepted, chosen, worthy, and important. They are reminded that no matter what they do or what happens in their lives, they are loved by Jesus.
