The Way

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

5 years ago my mom and I hiked El Camino de Santiago in Spain. El Camino is a network of pilgrimage routes that end at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Because there are many different routes, a system was set up to guide travelers. Along each path are small scallop signs. Pilgrims watch for the scallop imprinted on streets, wooden posts or the side of buildings. In 15 days of hiking over 200 miles, my mom and I became astute at spotting the symbol. Each time we did, it was reassurance that we had not lost our way.

Sometimes we wish life had waymarkers. In John 14 the disciple Thomas, expressed this. Jesus told the disciples that he was leaving and they knew the way. Thomas is confused. He didn’t get the itinerary, so how could know the directions? In his confusion he thought Jesus was talking about a physical place. But that wasn’t it. Jesus was talking about himself.

Jesus responds with an important declaration “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Thomas didn’t need directions or a map, he only needed Jesus. He is the way to life and relationship with God the Father.

As imperfect people, we can’t earn our own way to new life. We can’t heal all that our mistakes have broken. The only way to forgiveness, healing and union with our Lord, is through Jesus. When we take Jesus at his word and believe in who he is, we are forgiven and given truth and everlasting life.

We may not have scallops telling us which way to turn. But Jesus lives in us and guides us into all truth and life. When you are confused by the truth and not sure what to think, Jesus is the truth. If you are looking for a path forward and trying to find meaning, Jesus is the way. When life feels hard to grasp and darkness threatens to overwhelm, Jesus is life. How have you tried to pave your own way? Have you accepted Jesus as the only way, truth and life? In what ways has knowing Jesus changed your life?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, We praise you that our salvation isn’t dependent on us. But rather, it is found in Jesus, who is the way. In a world full of confusion, may the truth of Jesus bring abundant life. May we be filled with joy as we seek to follow and trust in Jesus alone. It is in his name that we pray, Amen.
